We aim to reply within 3-5 business days. If you’re reporting a problem, it helps enormously if you include:

·       Your iPhone model and iOS version (Settings → General → About)

·       The Compete for Causes app version (Profile → Settings, shown at the bottom)

·       What you expected to happen, and what happened instead

·       The challenge name, if it relates to a specific challenge

Frequently asked questions

‍ ‍

My calories aren’t showing up

Compete For Causes reads Active Energy and Steps from Apple Health. If nothing is appearing:

1.      Open the Health app → tap your profile picture → Apps and ServicesCompete For Causes

2.      Make sure Active Energy and Steps are turned on

3.      Return to Compete For Causes and pull down to refresh

If you skipped or declined the Health permission prompt when you first opened the app, this is a common cause. iOS only shows that prompt once.

‍ ‍

I just worked out — why isn’t it counted yet?

Give it about 15 seconds and pull to refresh.

Your own totals update almost immediately, but leaderboards are calculated in the cloud so everyone sees consistent numbers. That step takes a few extra seconds. This is deliberate: it keeps everyone’s rankings in agreement rather than showing you a number nobody else can see.

If it’s been more than a minute and you don’t see your totals updated for a recent activity, force-quit the app and reopen it.

‍ ‍

My workout from another app isn’t counting

Some third-party fitness apps record a workout without writing the calorie data that Apple Health shares with other apps. When that happens, the workout appears in Health but Compete For Causes can’t see the energy burned.

‍ ‍

What helps:

·       Check whether the workout shows Active Energy in the Health app. If that value is missing there, neither Compete for Causes nor any other app can read your Active Energy.

·       Recording with the Apple Watch Workout app, or an app that writes Active Energy, will always be counted.

We’re aware of this limitation and are working on it. If it’s affecting you, email us and tell us which app you use — it genuinely helps us prioritize future development.

How are points calculated?

Based on clinical and public health recommendations for daily physical activity, the app will suggest a Standard Daily Target of exercise and movement calories based on age, gender, and weight which approximates several miles of moderate walking per day. In the App, you will have an ability to customize that higher or lower across activity levels of Beginner, Moderate, Standard, Advanced and Expert depending on how hard you want to push yourself. Consider reviewing your Typical Burn in the app to compare to your recent historical metrics. You can review your Daily Target any time under your profile.

Exercise in any way you want! Every movement-related calorie counts toward your points. Your points are based on how much of your Daily Target of calories you reach. Partial days still contribute — you don’t have to hit 100% on any day to help your group. Your efforts exceeding 100% on any given day can help meet the points for the broader group.

The Daily Targets are meant to be challenging to achieve. If you have to exercise more than 75 minutes per day to achieve your Daily Target at Standard level, please consider lowering your activity level in future challenges or for daily performance tracking.

Your points for a given day are calculated as Active Energy in Apple Health divided by your Daily Target selected for the challenge times 100. Your score scales with how far you exceed your Daily Target, up to a cap that keeps a single big day from running away with the leaderboard. For example, a Daily Target of 660 and on a day where one moves 1300 Active Energy units, the resulting score would be 1300/660×100 = 197 points.

‍ ‍

What tips do you have for hitting Daily Targets in the app?

If using a wearable, wear it during exercise but also during daily movement (e.g. grocery store run). Passive movement can meaningfully contribute — often 30-40% of your Daily Target for many users.

During exercise, use Apple Fitness or other exercise apps and turn on/off at start and end of the workout; an elevated heart rate/motion burns more calories.

Charge your wearables while sleeping or when sedentary (e.g. meals, desk job).

‍ ‍

Why did my target change — and did my old days change too?

No. Past days are locked to the Daily Target that applied on the day you earned them.

If you update your weight or your goal, only today and future days use the new Daily Target. A day you completed at your old Daily Target stays completed. This is intentional — your history shouldn’t rewrite itself.

‍ ‍

I joined a challenge — which target applies?

When you join a challenge, you are allowed to select from one of five activity levels to compete at. Once the challenge begins, your target is locked in for the duration of the challenge, so the playing field stays consistent for everyone. Outside a challenge, your everyday personal Daily Target applies and can be adjusted at any time in the profile section of the app.

‍ ‍

How do teams work?

Some challenges are organized and include the possibility to join teams. If a challenge supports teams, you’ll be able to choose a team from a pre-defined list that Compete for Causes creates in coordination with the challenge Organizer. If you don’t see a team you’d like to join for a challenge that is already live, you may be able to add a new team by visiting competeforcauses.com/add-a-team-1. Once you’ve selected a team in the app, your team appears next to your name on the leaderboard, and the challenge shows team-level leaderboards as well as individual ranking leaderboards.

‍ ‍

My streak looks wrong

Streaks are calculated in the cloud from your recorded days. If your streak looks wrong right after opening the app, give it a few seconds to finish loading.

If it’s still wrong after a refresh, email us with the dates involved and we’ll investigate.

‍ ‍

My profile photo isn’t updating on the leaderboard

Pull down to refresh the leaderboard. If it still shows the old photo, force-quit and reopen the app.

‍ ‍

I’m not getting notifications

1.      SettingsNotificationsCompete For Causes → make sure Allow Notifications is on

2.      Check that Focus or Do Not Disturb in your Apple device isn’t suppressing them

3.      If you declined notifications when first opening the app, you can re-enable them in Settings at any time

‍ ‍

Who can see my information?

When you join a challenge, other participants in that challenge can see your name, profile photo, points, rank, progress and associated team (if you have selected a team).

They cannot see your email address, age, weight, gender, or your raw health data.

Full details are in our Privacy Policy for the app and Privacy Policy for the website.

‍ ‍

How do I delete my account?

Open the app → ProfileDelete Account.

This permanently removes your account, profile, and associated activity data. It cannot be undone.

Two things worth knowing:

·       Deleting the app alone does not delete your account. You need to use Delete Account in the app first.

·       Your Apple Health data is not affected. It stays on your device, under your control. We only ever read a copy.

‍ ‍

How do I stop the app reading my health data?

Health app → your profile picture → Apps and ServicesCompete For Causes → turn off the categories you don’t want shared. You can do this at any time without deleting your account.

‍ ‍

Can I request a copy of my data?

Yes. Email us at the address above and we’ll help.
